Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. is moving hundreds of jobs to its Colorado headquarters and Florida's Space Coast over the next eight years.
The move comes on the heels of winning a major contract expansion for work on submarine-launched Trident II nuclear missiles for the U.S. Navy.
Jefferson County-based LMSS — an 18,000-employee unit of Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) — will move 650 jobs from Sunnyvale, California, to the company’s two others sites.
“The positions focused on engineering and design will come to Colorado, “ said Matt Kramer, a Lockheed Martin spokesman. “We are still working out the details, so we don’t have an exact number yet.”
LMSS is offering workers in Sunnyvale a chance to relocate with their jobs, the company said. It expects the bulk of the jobs moving to Colorado won’t start coming here until 2020, Kramer said.
"We value the deep expertise of our employees, and we're working diligently to shape a transition that leverages the knowledge of this team," said Rick Ambrose, LMSS' executive vice president.
Last week, the U.S. Navy added $636.2 million to two existing LMSS contracts for work through 2021 on the submarine-launched Trident II D5 nuclear missile systems used by the U.S. and British navies.
