That's just well-disguised self-disgust brought on by the knowledge that they really do belong, lock, stock, and barrel, to the Brits and the Americans.  But for the US and the U.K. They'd have really had a go at real socialism, courtesy of the Russians (or fascism, which is much the same, courtesy of the Germans).  It's the loss of so much potential martyrdom - which the U.K. and US denied them, that really gets their collective goat, I think.

She's pretty strongly on track to make it into the runoff though. Why I said this isn't going to have much of an effect now, but changes the dynamics of the runoff considerably. When people have lost their first choice, it's little things like this that make a large difference.

VERY smart move on her part. If she had agreed to wear the scarf,right away that would have tagged her as being subservient to a Muslim and to Islam itself. By refusing,she proved to potential voters that she will stand up for France and the French culture over the culture of the Barbarian invaders.

I can relate. My German side is often at war with my French (Quebec) side and I find myself unsure whether to conquer or surrender to myself.

There's that for sure. But the self loathing also comes from doing so little well. When in modern times has French anything been heralded globally as truly great?  Today the best things they are able to lay claim to are all rooted in a past 300-500 years gone.
