Our History

Log Cabin Republicans have a proud history of fighting to build a stronger, more inclusive Republican Party. Gay and lesbian Republicans have chosen to transform the GOP from the inside, working to overcome the forces of exclusion and intolerance.

The name of the organization is a reference to the first Republican President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a Log Cabin. President Lincoln built the Republican Party on the principles of liberty and equality. The party should return to its roots. When the organization was founded, the name, “Lincoln Club,” was already taken by another GOP group, so organizers instead chose the name Log Cabin Republicans.

President Reagan Linked to Log Cabin Republicans’ Founding

Log Cabin Republicans got its start in California during the late 1970s. After several years of advances for the cause of gay and lesbian rights, a backlash was building. Singer Anita Bryant led a successful “Save Our Children” campaign to overturn an anti-discrimination ordinance in Dade County, Florida. The legislatures of Arkansas and Oklahoma had banned gays and lesbians from holding teaching positions.
In California, Republican State Senator John Briggs, who had ambitions to be governor, proposed a statewide ballot initiative to prevent gay and lesbian people from teaching in public schools. The so-called Briggs Initiative also permitted the firing of any educator who was determined to be “advocating, imposing, encouraging or promoting” homosexuality. Briggs’ vicious campaign to “defend your children from homosexual teachers” seemed to be heading for victory. One poll showed support for the Briggs Initiative leading 61% to 31%.

Many prominent politicians in the Republican and Democratic parties were hesitant about standing up to the bigotry of Briggs and his allies. That’s when gay conservatives turned to former California governor Ronald Reagan. At the time he was preparing to mount a campaign for the 1980 Republican presidential nomination. His advisors all thought he was committing political suicide when he decided to be an outspoken foe of the Briggs Initiative. Reagan declared that the initiative “is not needed to protect our children — we have the legal protection now.”

Reagan went further, detailing the dangers of passing such a measure. “It has the potential for real mischief,” the former governor explained. “What if an overwrought youngster, disappointed by bad grades, imagined it was the teacher’s fault and struck out by accusing the teacher of advocating homosexuality? Innocent lives could be ruined.”

Reagan’s forceful opposition helped defeat the Briggs Initiative. In November 1978, voters rejected the Briggs Initiative by more than one million votes. Even in conservative Orange County, Briggs’ home base, the initiative lost. Long-time Democratic gay activist David Mixner met with Reagan in 1978 to personally lobby him on the Briggs initiative, recalling, “Never have I been treated more graciously by a human being. He turned opinion around and saved that election for us,” Mixner said. “We would have been in deep trouble. He just thought it was wrong and came out against it.”

@Norm Lenhart

The alexa metric I would be interested to see the most for FR is, "Where do freerepublic.com's visitors go next?".

Probably some gay teen porn site.

I haven't participated over there in over a year and they "zotted" me from their Facebook group.  I still check out the articles over there on occasion, because hey, it's news.

I silently laughed myself silly when I saw on the front page at one particular time was a linked story to the Globe written by David Pecker, with about 40 replies to it.

What a sad mockery of itself that place became.

Sorry, but I see a bit of hypocrisy here.

Made a big deal that Leftists in Berkley, California wouldn't allow Milo Yiannopoulus to speak at a scheduled event.

What's the difference if you do it an hour before the show.....or do it a week prior.

The decision to riot/withdraw invitation is due to the same reason.

Somebody doesn't like what he's saying.

One thinks they're demonstrating their moral high ground by setting fires and breaking glass and heads.   While the Left uses brawn, the Right simply cancels, claiming to allow somebody to speak, who defend such a lifestyle, would go against CPAC's mission statement/foundation.

you know....sort of like a Christian baker refusing to make a homosexual wedding cake.    /s

I suppose I agree with Rich Lowry at National Review.

The mistake made was inviting him in the first place.  Because, sure, now they do look like censors, as he said.

But thanks to their first mistake, they didn't have much of an option really.

Life goes on.  Erick Erickson invited a non conservative in Donald Trump to speak at the Red State gathering and cancelled that invite.  He didn't ruin himself in the grand scheme of things with that.

@jmyrlefuller

DCP will defend anyone who loves Trump as much as he does no matter what they've done.

Milo loves him some "daddy"...therefore he must be defended.

Please ping my a$$ if you're going to talk about me.  I shouldn't have to trip over it.

Not defending Yiannopoulos.   Merely saying they should have let him speak, and THEN if necessary, distance themselves.

After all, we elected a President who, we found out, has grabbed some p###y, whose wife has posed nude.....

....you get my drift?

The moral haughtiness is more than one can bear.

The guy made a decision to prefer Donald Trump over Clinton.  The rest could be all theater.

This has been out for a long time. It has never been hidden and Milo's disgusting past has been known. Many, many, many people simply chose to turn a blind eye to it.

Part and parcel of the entire Trump movement itself.

As long as one is saluting and praising Trump - then it doesn't matter what kind of a liberal/Socialist immoral degenerate they are.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Maybe, but unless their metrics changed over the last couple years, it's still apples to apples using only their stats. FR tanked hard. I have kept an aye on them since Romney and their rise and fall went lockstep with Romney-then-Trump's popularity prior to the election and went into freefall after the elections were over. That aligns with most casual political types going back to their lives for another 3.5 years so I'd think that was fairly accurate overall.
It looked to me that their election season boost got buried in the hole created by the purges. Starting in April they dropped, and even filling in that hole with the POTUS election traffic didn't show any significant increase over that peak.
FR got itself hurt by running off a lot of people, and repulsing others, back in April and over the Summer. That looks like it's part of the post election drop, along with departing Indian (dot, not feather) traffic and the ordinary post-election slump.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I wouldn't know about it then or now.

But I notice it seems a big deal among some conservatives, now.

Oh dear god. TOS is still supporting Milo in this.
http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3527137/posts

@AbaraXas

TOS has sunk to new lows. I predict it will officially implode when Milo comes out negatively against Trump.

KSKY 660, The Answer, in Dallas/Fort Worth is a station that has aligned itself with all things Trump. Even John David Wells, a host I trusted (somewhat), has gone to the Dark Side. I simply can't abide this station anymore. It was bad enough that commercials take up close to 25 minutes of every hour, but the hosts are forgiving Trump for everything, preaching the mantra that Trump kept Hillary out of the White House.

Is that a philosophical argument they want to project for the next four years?   :3:

There is NOTHING the tRump defenders won't support.
Remember all those women coming forward and saying they believed Bill Clinton.
That same mentality is alive and well in the so called republican party.

Trump defenders have found a home on Fox News, too. It's their "safe space", except when Shep's on the air. This is getting ridiculous.

I gather the CPAC meetings were created to promote conservatism. This guy admits to not being a conservative.  In fact, he sounds more like a self-promoter who has hooked up with some questionable people.  What then actually would be the point of having him speak?

Ann Coulter on Milo Meltdown: ‘Pederasty Acceptable Only for Refugees and Illegals’

Beatrice Verhoeven
The Wrap
February 20, 2017

Quote
Conservative pundit Ann Coulter has made an entire career out of saying shocking, deliberately offensive things in response to public controversies. So she did today when she weighed in on the career meltdown of Breitbart Editor and fellow conservative Milo Yiannopoulos in terms calculated for maximum outrage.

Coulter’s tweet comes after video emerged over the weekend in which Yiannopoulos defended pedophiliac behavior at length, referred to people as young as 13 as “sexually mature,” and joked that his own experience as a victim of molestation made him good at oral sex.

He's really "upped his game" from this exchange a few years back with David Mitchell and Boy George (!):
