Democrats, ‘Never Trumpers’ Thrilled at Prospect of Harward as National Security Adviser

An ally of potential national security adviser Robert Harward is soliciting resumes from a who's who of Republican foreign policy insiders and says the retired admiral and former Navy SEAL plans to revamp the White House’s National Security Council following the resignation earlier this week of Michael Flynn, according to an email obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Mary Beth Long, a former CIA officer and official in the George W. Bush administration, recently emailed a handful of prominent foreign policy leaders in Washington, D.C., to gauge interest in serving under Harward.

Long, who signed a letter critical of Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign but later changed her opinion of the New York real estate developer, said in the email that "Bob Harward is going to ‘start over' at the NSC in about two weeks."

Republicans and Democrats alike have championed the selection of Harward, who served on the National Security Council during the George W. Bush administration and is close to Defense Secretary James Mattis. This includes several former Obama administration officials such as Tommy Vietor, who served as the NSC’s spokesman under Obama.

But Long's email, as well as the positive reception of Harward among former Obama officials, has spooked several current officials who worked under Flynn. They are concerned that Harward is planning to wholly revamp the NSC and remove staffers close to Flynn’s former team.

Harward "plans a housecleaning of Trump's National Security Council staff," read the headline on an article Wednesday in Foreign Policy.

Not good at all @LonestarDream and I was surprised that Bannon let this one go south as quickly and spectacularly as it did. He's supposed to be the strategy guy and a big piece of that is messaging.

And I'm mad that they did not get Pence in front of this from the get go.

@don-o, expect to keep seeing flubs as long as Bannon is calling the shots.  But I think this one is too early to call.

Well it was Bannon's call to fire Flynn apparently. Maybe I got him all wrong.

Get it straight: Bannon is not a conservative, Flynn is a Democrat and "NeverTrumpers" are conservatives who oppose Trump.

Report: Robert Harward Turns Down Trump’s Offer National Security Adviser Job

Posted at 6:30 pm on February 16, 2017 by Jim Jamitis

Financial Times is reporting that the President’s pick to replace Mike Flynn as National Security Adviser has turned down the job.

Mr Trump asked Robert Harward, a retired navy special forces officer, to succeed Mr Flynn, who was fired as national security adviser on Monday. At a press conference on Thursday, he said his decision to replace Mr Flynn had been made easier because he had an “outstanding” candidate to serve as a replacement.

But Mr Harward is said to have turned Mr Trump down. “Harward is conflicted between the call of duty and the obvious dysfunctionality,” said one person with first hand knowledge of the discussions between Mr Trump and Mr Harward. The second person said Mr Trump had asked Mr Harward to return to the White House for another meeting to try to change his mind.

Concerns over whether he could hire his own staff may have been a cause for the refusal.

One of the people familiar with Mr Harward’s decision said he was concerned about whether the top advisers around Mr Trump would allow him to install his own staff on the NSC — particularly after suggestions that KT McFarland, Mr Flynn’s deputy, had been asked to remain. When he was offered the position, Mr Harward had told Mr Trump that he wanted some time to think over the idea.

That's the way to do it.
