PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence is pledging that Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch will be seated on the high court "one way or the other."

Pence's comments during a speech in Philadelphia to the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group, echoed President Donald Trump's comments from earlier in the week. Trump urged the Senate's Republican leader to scrap longstanding rules and "go nuclear" if Democrats block Gorsuch.

Are you proclaiming a metamorphosis has indeed occurred? I'm more inclined to call it an fast evolved protective camouflage ability, that he can turn on and off as convenient.

The vice president is also President of the Senate.

Does that position make him superior to, or subordinate to McConnell, the "majority leader"?

I ask that question to get an answer, so that I can pose the next question:

If the President of the Senate has the power to over-rule the majority leader, could Pence then over-rule McConnell and force a vote to end the filibuster?

Just askin' ...

i will speculate Pence could take the gavel and run the session, inviting a motion to change the rules.

And you would be wrong.  The position is largely ceremonial and other than being able to cast a tie-breaker vote, does not come with a lot of actual power over the Senate.

Good thing I was speculating, not declaring.

All this talk that we won biggly and we are going to continue to win biggly far far into the future is getting kinda old in my opinion.

When push comes to shove, this nomination is meaningless in the big picture, as it will not change the 5-4 split that existed with Scalia on the bench.

However, those in the GOP that are willing to go to the mat and declare the "nuclear option" for this nomination will likely get bit on the ass big time in the future..

The partisans on both sides will soon lose interest as Trump is sure to provide an outrage of the day and in the background a good pick will be confirmed..

As has been said the position of VP is about as useful as a warm bucket of spit...

The VP's sole role in the Senate is to vote to break ties, the Constitution gives him no other authority..

" ...Trump urged the Senate's Republican leader to scrap longstanding rules and "go nuclear" if Democrats block Gorsuch...."

Longstanding rules my a$$... Dem Sen Harry Reid "nuked" those long standing rules just a few years ago for lower court confirmations. For all intents and purposes, the Senate filibuster rule has been dead ever since. The Dems can never be trusted in the future to follow such a rule again. I seriously doubt that the Republican Senate Majority Leader would now allow the Dems to use the defunct filibuster rule to stop Gorsuch's confirmation.

The Dems did it to themselves in this case...

I have never seen anything from past history that would indicate that the VP can supersede the Senate Majority Leader in regards setting senate rules.

And, I have not seen any statement from McConnell that he wants to maintain the now defunct filibuster rule and allow the Dems to block Gorsuch's confirmation vote. I'm puzzled with any suggestion about why there is a need for VP Spence to supersede the Senate Majority Leader in regards to this...

I couldn't disagree more. Dem Harry Reid already nuked the senate filibuster rule a short few years ago. For all intent and purposes that rule is now dead. The Dems can never be trusted to follow that rule in the future. The Republican Senate Majority are no longer obligated to follow this now defunct rule.

It is entirely the fault of the Dems that the long standing senate filibuster rule is now null and void...

It is also interesting to note... from what I have read... that Dem Sen Chuck Schumer was opposed to Dem Reid's "nuclear option" back then because he realized that the Dems would also likely get bit on the ass big time in the future...

And Dem Schumer's fear has now become reality.

What we've lived through, this past decade has been nothing less than a coup by the Socialists at the head of the Democrat Party.

They knew that the key to controlling the masses, and free markets, was thru government-run health-care.

They saw what happened to their Party back when the Alinskyite of the Clinton Family tried in 1992, and this time, they'd change the locks on the doors and pass it under newfound rules...late Christmas Eve.

And Harry Reid, figuring on a Hillary win in November, hinted at the Senate expanding use of the Nuclear Option to include Supreme Court picks

And, 'Hans', if not for that "wrench in the gears...the fly in the ointment", Donald Trump, the Coup would have succeeded.  We wouldn't be looking at Gorsuch right now.   And, we'd have Single-Payer healthcare premiums.

We were THAT close to losing it all.

"Coup". An idiot term used by idiots. Unless it's an actual coup we're talking about that is.

So, you dismiss the entire content/substance of my post because of your obvious ignorance of the definition of "Coup"

And it has come to pass that instead the Republicans control both chambers of Congress and the White House... and they WILL confirm Gorsuch to the USSC.

The "real fight" in the Senate won't be over Gorsuch.

It will happen when Ginsburg's replacement comes due...

Article I specifies that the Vice-President is the President of the Senate, but has no vote unless there is a tie.  There is precedent, mostly in the early days of the Republic, for the Vice-President actively exercising this role.  You "would" should be "most likely would".
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

Do not be deluded that the dems wouldn't use the Nuclear Option, if the tables were reversed.

They would, and they will in the future if and when it comes to it.

So the republicans should make maximum use of the power they have NOW.
