Sock Hop
« on: February 03, 2017, 05:38:21 pm »

It is that day of the year again, so perhaps a general thread on music from that era.

Some of this history and songs we may know all to well.

If one wishes to go even to the '40s; a lot of that music is very good too.  It's all good.

@jmyrlefuller

I've thought "white sports coat and a pink carnation" sounded a bit corny; but this band from Ireland picked it up and covered it very well.  A new perspective on the song. Again Irish singing this.

I've liked this image in particular, note, the 3 gals are Asians (assuming the one with her back to us is also). I'd like to see the original painting.

Retro bands are nice too.

The Firebirds have a good version of "Come And Go With Me" and it makes me appreciate the original more as well.

& finally, to get back to where this thread started:

It's all good. Pookie is really an in-house expert on this.

--------------

I also opened this up because all of the songs are worthy but what is amazing are the many songs that we may not know.

We know most of Elvis', I was listening to him last night but there were many other artists back in the day.

@Wingnut:

You were talking about Hoyt Axton, I found out that Hoyt's mother co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" (Elvis); so he comes from a musical family. Hoyt and his mom are in the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

2 lesser-known versions:

From what I understand, J.P. Richardson (Big Bopper) had come down with the flu on the tour so he asked Waylon Jennings to give up his seat on the plane & Jennings did so. For the final seat, guitarist Tommy Allsup "lost" a coin flip to Ritchie Valens...

I mentioned him on another thread.  Don't remember why though!   lol

Thanks for posting that, truth_seeker!

I'm guessing that the Johnny Bond who interviewed Eddie was this guy:

A couple more of Eddie's songs that I like:

Some decent boogie woogie dance contests videos are at youtube, this one randomly selected.

It'd be fine to be a really good dancer.

She is releasing a new album in 2017:

Quote
She hasn’t sung a note in a year or too and her regular appearances at veteran reunions have come to an end. In 2015 Dame Vera Lynn wasn’t well enough to attend the 70th anniversary celebration of VE Day. But she is still among us and on 20 March she qualifies for a telegram from Her Majesty. To celebrate, her original label Decca have dusted off some of the old tunes from the war and subjected them to a spot of spit and polish.

(Jim Reeves has a very good version of the above song, if one is interested)

Bump on this, nostalgic thread and I likea lot of that music, I was even listening to music from the 20s and 30s for a spell.

Soundies, kind of nice.

This is kind of nice too; Salsa or whatever is the correct description, some enjoyable moments.

Some pictures worth perusing:

There are whole forums dedicated to nostalgia so just a little touch here.

Wish we still had gas stations like this.

Edit On: I forgot the link, a number of pictures.
