Russia is helping Iran with their Nuclear program also propping up their puppet Assad in Syria.. So they are doing squat about Islamic Extremism..
Um..... if nothing else, they're blowing the crap out of the Islamic Extremists in Syria.
But now let's be serious. We must grant that Russia is an adversary. However, you don't seem to recognize what Putin is doing. It's ruthless, but it's also very effective.
Putin is re-establishing Russia as a Great Power, and is engaged in the utilitarian manner of foreign policy that characterized Great Power activities in the decades prior to the First World War.
Aside from filling the vacuum that Obama created, what the Russians are doing is in service of some rather obvious goals, using methods that worked very well for them during the Soviet era. For example:
1. Syria: establish a firm naval foothold in the Mediterranean, and a military presence on the Turkish frontier. This eliminates, or at least mitigates, Turkey's control over Russian access to the Mediterranean through the Black Sea. By propping up Assad, they effectively gain control over the country.
2. Iran: gain access to the Persian Gulf, and also exercise influence over Iranian oil production. Exert influence over the Iranian regime by creating a reliance on Russian experts and materials for nuclear production and military weaponry.
3. The Russian presence in Syria and Iran puts Iraq in a subservient position, and permits a
de facto land connection between Iran and Syria. Who would stop them?
4. Russian hegemony over the rest of the Middle East follows. And Russian influence on Middle Eastern oil production helps their own oil and gas industry.
