Yep - and you are both correct.

However ... (you knew that was going to happen)

Fear goes both ways. You've a population at home that are also quite frightened and want to know something, anything, is being done, especially after the complete incompetence of the last lot in power.

It's a balance. Enough information to reassure the people at home, until such time as they relax and start to trust the ones set to protect them again, with enough darkness to make the enemy fear. I feel the new administration will err on the side of too much information for a while. Makes our job harder, but thems the breaks.

I'm old school enough to still believe that you only release information like this when there is nothing more of value to be gained from holding it closely!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Absolutely agree. From what I know of Mattis, he thinks exactly the same way, and I do foresee reports of this sort becoming rarer and less instanta as time goes on.

We've crossed paths a few times - amicably.

Or you have a pompous jackass as a President who wishes to pat himself, like Obama did with OBL.

Yeah! That's the problem for sure!  Hopefully people around him who knows better will be able to convince him that he shouldn't give in to those urges!

I would add to that a media that...unless they hear about Daesh fighters being killed...will assume we aren't doing it and start writing stories about how we aren't doing anything to stop terrorism...thus frightening people even more.
The libs/dems of today are the Quislings of former years. The cowards who would vote a fraud into office in exchange for handouts from the devil.
