Fukushima killed it.

These plants remove that issue.  No outside power is required to bring them down.  A complete loss of all support systems and controls puts the unit into controlled shutdown.

I can accept that for most areas, but some areas in New England for example, have become so pipeline constrained that Natural Gas prices are higher locally and no real fuel source for additional NatGas power to replace existing Nukes.

Also, in NE, the huge amount of hydro generation from Quebec makes up a huge share of their load. I don't know if Hydro Quebec is building any more dams, but I know that was one politician's answer to the closing of Vermont Yankee.

The NIMBY's there protest the power lines coming down from Canada as well.

And still they wonder why New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut have the highest electricity costs in the continental US.

@thackney

Amazing how relying on 50 year old technology can cause problems.

The "new" technology depends on natural circulation of temperature differences, quantities of mass, heat extraction by allowing exterior water bath to boil off.  Real cutting edge stuff there... (only half sarcasm...)

We've had the NIMBY-morons also stop the building of more gas pipelines here in Illinoisy too.....

So long as power plants can be fueled by natural gas or coal, I don't see nuclear power coming back any time soon. Certainly not for 40-50 years.

Fukushima killed it.

That is all...

Not really. Economics of cheap gas killed nuclear power.
