Trump Threatens BMW With Border Tax on Cars Built in Mexico

President-elect Donald Trump has warned the United States will impose a border tax of 35 percent on cars that German carmaker BMW plans to build at a new plant in Mexico and export to the U.S. market.

Trump was speaking in an interview with German newspaper Bild, which on Sunday released excerpts of his comments translated into German.

A BMW spokeswoman said a BMW Group plant in San Luis Potosi would build the BMW 3 Series starting from 2019, with the output intended for the world market. The plant in Mexico would be an addition to existing 3 Series production facilities in Germany and China.

Trump said BMW should build its new car factory in the United States because this would be "much better" for the company.

Last I checked  a Tax has to be passed  by Congress , Also BMW  is a German  company  Trump should  butt  out,

This is where Trump should but out. A tax on imported cars means less car sales in the U.S. Which means less jobs for people in the U.S. who sell and service BMWs. Does Trump actually believe a person who can afford a BMW won't buy it  somewhere else?

This is King Trump (in his own mind) who will tell companies what they have to do or he will punish them.  This is to make companies/people do his will without thinking what it will do to the American people.  His will is what matters to him, nothing else.  He has been this way all his life and will never change as I have said from the beginning.  It will evidently take a catastrophic event he causes before his supporters realize he is damaged goods and the country is in peril due to that.

Big deal. If anyone bothers to notice, the US has tariffs on imported cars. That is why these manufacturers moved plants here. These tariffs have kept Detroit afloat, especially on truck sales.

The manufacturers in this country that export most of their products are sweating bullets right now. I'm one of those. Add the rising dollar making our products more expensive and we're in big trouble. If the US can demand the products it consumes be made in the US other countries will demand the products they consume be made in their country. The result is the big conglomerates can move manufacturing into those countries for local consumption to continue selling their products. Little companies like mine simply get shutout of the international markets and die as a result of these protectionist actions.

Trump wants to pick winners and losers and I'm on the losing end. I'm not optimistic about the future at all.

I wonder what Fender Musical Instruments is going to do.  I think the largest part of their sales is from made in Mexico guitars. It would be weird to see MIM Stratocasters costing more than USA models.....

If Trump tries to start a trade war with Germany, he'll end up with a trade war with the EU, and that will do substantial damage to the US, damage the Chinese will be only too happy to take advantage of.

We're likely to end up with a trade war with China, and if they are successful in completing it, all the countries in their version of the TPP (called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership - the RCEP). 

Those countries consist of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.

For Trump's already talked about ending our "one-China" policy, which China has clearly stated would warrant a strong response.  Trump's also said that China is a currency manipulator and that they take unfair advantage of the US. 

And that he'd "fix that".

People who purchase BMWs are brand conscious....not price conscious.

If one can afford $50K for the best driving machine on the planet...they can afford the price increase due to any tariff.
