In an eloquent opening statement at his confirmation hearing Thursday, Ben Carson shut down criticisms that he is not qualified to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the Trump administration. While he submitted a formal opening statement, the retired neurosurgeon spoke off the cuff for most of his opening statement in front of the Senate Banking Committee.
Carson made the case that he understands housing insecurity, pointing out that he grew up in inner-city Detroit with a single mother who only had a third grade education but worked day and night to provide for her two sons. Carson wrote in his opening statement that through her example, she “showed the power of perseverance, the importance of hard work, and inspired me to always achieve excellence.”
