David Shulkin, MD, currently Under Secretary for Health at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), is president-elect Donald Trump's pick for the department's top job, Trump announced at a news conference in New York City on Tuesday.

"One of the commitments I made is that we're going to straighten out the whole situation for our veterans," Trump said. "Our veterans have been treated horribly. They are waiting in line 15, 16, 17 days [for healthcare]; there are cases where they go in and have a minor, early-stage form of cancer, and by the time they get to the doctor, they're terminal. That's not going to happen. David is going to do a fantastic job."

As part of a general overhaul of the VA healthcare system, "We have some of the great hospitals of the world that are going to align themselves with us on the VA, like the Cleveland Clinic, like the Mayo Clinic, and we're going to set up a group. These are hospitals that have been the top of the line," he said.
