Best Buy Co. Inc. has been pulled into an unusual child-pornography criminal case by the apparent role of some of its Geek Squad repair technicians as FBI informants — a relationship that has the defendant's lawyers crying foul.

The Washington Post reports on the case and its potential implications, both for law enforcement and businesses.

If technicians at Richfield-based Best Buy (or anyplace else) come across child-pornography images in the course of repairing a computer, they're obligated to contact law enforcement. And that's what the government says happened in the case of a California physician who sent his computer to be fixed at Best Buy; a Geek Squad technician found child-porn images on the hard drive, flagged the FBI and the doctor was arrested.

No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

For $89/month, one can go to CBT Nuggets (www.cbtnuggets.com) and obtain video training on obtaining your CompTIA A+ certification.  That will educate you on how to repair PC hardware.  You can then take courses in Microsoft and/or Linux and educate yourself on how to install, maintain and fix the software.

I am of the opinion that with a weekly schedule of 5 to 10 hours per week, one should be able to educate themselves in both hardware and OS install and repair to the point that they will be able to exceed the skills offered by Geek Squad.  So for an investment of $270 and 60 to 120 hours of your time, you can obtain a valuable trade craft, reduce your pc costs and pc repair costs.

No, it is not for everyone, just thought I would share.
