Trump marks deadly year in Chicago, hints at federal help
By Melanie Zanona - 01/02/17 01:02 PM EST

President-elect Donald Trump remarked on Monday that 2016 was one of the most violent years in Chicago history, hinting that federal assistance may be necessary to help end the bloodshed in the city.

"Chicago murder rate is record setting - 4,331 shooting victims with 762 murders in 2016,” Trump tweeted. “If Mayor can't do it he must ask for Federal help!”

That's the only thing that makes sense to me.  I hope to God he's not thinking of sending in the National Guard.

Rudy Giuliani served as US Attorney and used RICO to bring down Mafia organizations.

That is a specific example of using federal help. He was appointed by Reagan.

Anything they do should be a local solution.

A good solid pro gun police chief who isn't an idiot has done a lot of good in Detroit.

Border Patrol, Police officers and maybe BSA, I forget will lead the inauguration parade. I'm sure Law Enforcement can do something.

"Local Choice"; that's Chicago's problem right now. They need something; one of our largest cities shouldn't have this garbage going on.

Largest, smallest, etc.

The City gets federal monies I'll bet? That's reason enough.

@mystery-ak

The article says the mayor wants the govn. to pay for summer jobs and pass "meaningful" gun laws and do a few other things.

Somebody needs to slam Trump's behind in a chair and give him a Constitutional crash course.

Hillsdale College even has freebie courses in the constitution, federalism, free market principles etc.

Obviously drug trafficking, heroin is part of the problem, if that doesn't make this bigger than a local problem, I don't know what does? There needs to be better interdiction and Trump indeed mentioned this in his campaign.

Overriding their local anti gun laws?

Not a good idea.  The violence is horrible and brought on by poor leadership locally and state-wise but I don't think over-riding states rights is the answer.

Federal government has no place in fixing a local crime problem.

Personally I like the way the Michigan constitution lays it out so clearly and I also like the fact that the state constitution supersedes all local ordinances. As gun laws have become friendlier many cities have tried to impose local restrictions but the courts have pretty much unanimously shut them down. We can open or concealed carry in places as liberal as even Ann Arbor or Kalamazoo. We can even open carry in the state capitol building.

Chicago needs to vote in a new local government that isn't corrupt.

Throwing money at the problem won't help.  Hiring more police definitely won't help.  Creating feel good programs such as "job training" and "midnight basketball " won't help.

I know no one likes the idea -- I don't -- but maybe we need military intervention.  Chicago isn't a city anymore.  It's a cesspool.  And it needs to be cleaned up.

Some states have check stations, the Border Patrol has check stations on the border and indeed, 100 miles or so from the border in some cases.

A lot of this is carnage is caused by drugs.

These are some ideas to think about.

Didn't NYC have a problem? It declined, some of that might be due to other circumstances but still;
