SpaceX unveils photo of 'world's most powerful rocket'
« on: January 01, 2017, 10:14:39 pm »

SpaceX has unveiled its first public photo of the Falcon Heavy rocket that it hopes can help send a manned space flight to Mars by 2018.

The company released an image on Instagram of the rocket being prepped at its factory in Hawthorne, California and said the Falcon Heavy, when it lifts off next year, “will be the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two.”

The rocket will have the ability to lift into orbit more than 54 metric tons (119,000 lbs.), a mass equivalent to a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel. Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost, SpaceX said.

The unveiling of the Falcon Heavy comes as SpaceX recovers from a Sept. 1 explosion at Cape Canaveral, Florida, that destroyed a Falcon 9 rocket carrying an Iridium Communications satellite. SpaceX has delayed launches while it investigated the causes of the explosion, which occurred on the launchpad during fueling.

There are 70 missions worth about $10 billion awaiting launch into orbit by Falcon 9 once the Federal Aviation Administration approves a return to flight, reported the Torrance Daily Breeze.

Its a step in the right direction. Ever since the Saturn V everything has been smaller and lifted smaller payloads at 5 times the cost.

Baby steps.. Again..  Had we continued with the Apollo program, I think we would be talking about leaving the solar system.

The election of Obama certainly didn't help. But it is typical. Most Liberal Democrats firmly believe that the money spent on space science/exploration could be better used if spent on illegals and what they call 'the poor'.

From what I have picked up from Trump, he seems to be very much in favor of space technology. There could be another aerospace boon under his leadership. I hope so.

Also, I wonder if all the scientific talent which has been laid-off over the last decade can be replaced or recovered. We shall see.

You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.
Rational fear and anger at vicious murderous Islamic terrorists is the same as irrational antisemitism, according to the Leftists.

I remember NASA under Clinton as worse than Obama.. NASA under Obama was nothing more than Climate fascism..

Oh yeah.

What people must understand that when we talk about these large rockets we're still looking at them primarily as tractor trailers to get payloads to orbit but they are essential for building the very large ships we'll need for real deep space travel.  The ships we'll need for long duration voyages within our own solar system will need to be aircraft carrier sized vessels. Hopefully the first will be mining and refining vessels  providing the materials for more ships without having to lift  everything from earth.

Its a side issue but important. I think the miners will be responsible for preventing asteroid impacts with earth.

One of the nice things about Ted Cruz is the fact that he's a space geek. I know he has told NASA that they need to stop looking backward at cloudtops real outward looking science.

Agreed on both counts.. We better treat the Belters right or they will cause trouble.

To be honest I'm more concerned about a Black Hole or a Neutron Star heading to this planet..
