I tried to like Steely Dan, but their music always sounded to me very pretentious northeast Ivy League, and very off putting. RIP Mr. Becker.

I went to see them twice because my brother loves them. The first time they wandered around like the Grateful Dead and I swore I would never go back.

The second time, last year, was a freebie. They were a little more fan friendly. It was a good concert.

RIP Walter.

Shelley Berman, comedian, dies at 92

Berman's entertainment career was slow to emerge, beginning his career as a part-time actor and writer before, at the age of 32, getting his break as a comic in Chicago, where he crafted the persona of a beleaguered observer of the eccentricities of life. His most famous routine was that of the one-sided conversation, in which he would carry on with someone on an imaginary phone and leave the unseen character's answer implied. When Bob Newhart went on to great success with the same routine not long after, Berman accused him of plagiarism; Newhart noted that Berman was just one of many influences, some of whom included comedians whom Berman had encountered in his early years.

Berman, while he never emerged as a headlining star, enjoyed a healthy and long-running acting career with roles in film, television and stage spanning six decades. He only ended his acting career after a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in 2014, which ultimately led to his death.

Obituary from the New York Times

Wikipedia
Shown slightly out of context in a 1963 television documentary, an incident in which Berman hit the ceiling over
a ringing telephone backstage while he performed at a Miami hotel---a telephone problem he thought had been
fixed earlier in the engagement---made him look so temperamental that within a couple of years his
career as a comedian dried up. (He admitted once to being "a perfectionistic son of a bitch," at least until his
young son died at 12 of a brain tumour.)

But until that, Berman was a comic genius:

Sugar Ramos passes away aged 75 in Mexico City

Quote
Former world featherweight champion Sugar Ramos, real name Ultiminio Ramos, has died at the age of 75 after a long fight from cancer.

One of the first victims of the professional boxing ban in Cuba, Ramos moved to Mexico – where he later became an idol – to escape the communist regime of Fidel Castro in 1961. Two years later he challenged Davey Moore for the WBA and WBC featherweight titles, and it is the tragic outcome of that bout that became Ramos’ unwanted claim to fame.

Yes, I remember Berman from his appearances on the Ed Sullivan show. I'm afraid I was just a little too young to understand a lot of his humor.  My parents laughed though.

There always was a smarter-than-thou strain in Becker and Fagen, but when they kept it in check
they made some remarkable music---even if about half their audience had no clue that they
were often being satirical in their lyrics.

They went to great lengths to get the 'right' sound from everything, even using multiple types of microphones to get what they wanted from vocals to instruments.  IMO, one of their best from a musical, lyrical, and production standpoint is Deacon Blues.  Listen to it on a quality set of speakers or headphones.  It's almost perfect.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

Gene Michael, Whose Yankee Teams Won 4 World Series, Dies at 79

Quote
Gene Michael, a Yankee for nearly a half-century, rising from sure-handed shortstop to general manager and building teams that won four World Series championships, died on Thursday. He was 79.

The Yankees reported his death on its website, saying the cause was a heart attack. It did not say where he died.

For much of Michael’s time with the Yankees, George Steinbrenner ran a revolving door that sent players, coaches, managers and front-office personnel spinning in and out of Yankee Stadium. Michael was fired a couple of times, then hired back.

Hosting the most expensive yet least reliable server on the planet is just one of San Jose's attractions, ranks just below the Quetzalcoatl sculpture.

Actually, I think San Jose is the location where John Robinson takes their (ahem) server for repairs every quarter.  Can you imagine the bucks that repairmen  makes? :silly:

Tie wraps and bailing wire must be getting expensive now days.
