LETTER: Leave the Marine Corps alone; it works
The Greenville News 1 a.m. EST December 24, 2016

Voltaire’s often quoted statement, “common sense is not so common,” was affirmed yet again in Washington a few months ago, with Defense Secretary Ashton’s denial of the Marine Corps’ request for an exception to the decree that women must be integrated into all positions, including the most strenuous ones of the infantry. This overrode the Marine Corp study of unit performance where women were integrated and found the performance of those units substandard. Hopefully, the newly presented candidate for that office, General Mattis (retired USMC 4 Star) will get that repealed.

With the value to the nation of the Marine Corps, one would think that its internal policies at the infantry unit level would never be overridden by someone who has never actually been in the military (Ashton: Harvard, Rhodes Scholar, and multiple high-level political appointment-type positions).
