EXCLUSIVE: General Mad Dog's bloodiest battle - how Trump's pick for Pentagon erupted with f-word rant as his all-out effort to crush jihadi 'nest of vipers' in Fallujah was over-ruled by George W Bush
President-elect Donald Trump's decision to name Retired Marine General James 'Mad Dog' Mattis as Secretary of Defense won praise from military officials
Mattis is a tough-talking intellectual who is known to favor aggressive tactics
The First Battle for Fallujah showed how the now-retired General used his decades of studying military history to draw up a strategy to occupy the city
When the White House told him and his troops to stand down, he repurposed a Napoleon quote, saying: 'If you're going to take Vienna, take f****** Vienna!'
The battle came after four American contractors working for Blackwater, a private military company, were ambushed as they drove through the city
The four, Scott Helvenston, Jerry Zovko, Wesley Batalona, and Mike Teague, were killed and dragged from their vehicle before their bodies were set alight

Retired Marine General James 'Mad Dog' Mattis exploded with rage when told to call off the assault on Fallujah during the Iraq War in 2004 and said: 'If you're going to take Vienna, take f****** Vienna!'
The incoming Secretary of Defense fumed at the orders from the White House and let rip with a quote from Napoleon he repurposed for Iraq.
Mattis had used his decades of studying military history to draw up a strategy to occupy Fallujah, and he even made Marines grow mustaches to look more like the locals.
But it was cast aside by then-President George W Bush who ordered an invasion after four American contractors were ambushed and burned to death.
