DALLAS

Police recruiters are trying to bring in hundreds of new police officers in Dallas.

Nearly 100 officers in the Dallas Police Department have quit or retired since October, according to multiple reports, worsening the department’s deficit of personnel.

Interim Police Chief David Pughes told City Council members Monday night that the department wanted to fill the next academy class with 60 officers but has only hired 30 for the February class, the Dallas Morning News reported. The department is down to 3,252 officers and wold like to have at least 3,500.

~3,300 officers
99 retire per year, a bit high but not an unusual attrition rate. It would be good to know more data, specifically around ages and if they came in from the same hiring time or if they are diversified across hire and age spectrum. Approximately a 3% attrition rate. A quick Google search finds that 7% seems to be on the low average range, 15% the average, and some departments are as high as 50% annually.

But the excerpt says 99 in 10 weeks.

One reason why more data is needed. It may be in 10 weeks, but based on HR filing and cut-off times, would this be a normal 10 week period for people who want to retire to issue letters of intent before the year closes out?

Even if you take that 10 weeks and assume the 3% attrition every 10 weeks, that would make it 15% attrition/year which is right in line with the average.

Good points.  And, another point is that baby boomers are creating a retirement bulge.  There's a lot of them and they're at that age now.
