Temporary suspension of N. Korean coal to have limited impact on Chinese coal market Updated: 2016-12-13 18:28:49 KST
With China having banned imports of North Korean coal until the end of this month in line with UN Security Council resolution 2321, experts see the cutoff having little impact on China, but a significant one on North Korea.
Chinese state-run paper the Global Times reported on Monday that the ban on North Korean coal is expected to have a limited impact on China because it does not rely heavily on North Korea as a source of coal.
China imports an average of 20 million tons of coal from North Korea every year, which is only 5 percent of the amount China produces itself.
Coal markets in some northeastern and coastal regions may be hurt, as they've been importing North Korean coal largely because of the convenience of transporting it and its lower price, but overall, the impact won't be a gamechanger.
