Donald Trump chooses Rick Perry to be energy secretary

Donald Trump has selected Rick Perry to be energy secretary, according to two sources directly involved in the transition and selection process.

He had been summoned to Trump Tower for a meeting Monday to discuss the position after having been contacted over the weekend. The meeting was only finalized on Sunday.

The other contenders for the position were Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, and Ray Washburne, a key Trump fundraiser, former RNC finance chair, restaurateur and investor in oil and gas operations.

The former Texas governor sits on two corporate boards - one of them is Energy Transfer Partners - and that may present a confirmation issue. Energy Transfer Partners has a subsidiary known as Dakota Access LLC, which is attempting to build the Dakota Access Pipeline. That Dakota Access Pipeline has been the subject of public protests over its potential environmental impact and damage to Native American lands.

Rick never met a Department that he didn't expand. He listens (usually), has good delegation skills and is generally a humble guy. He kept Texas afloat during the obummer regime, in spite of the immigration influx (which he had allot to do with) and him being an Aggie.

Not sure how this appointment drains the swamp..unless changing the color of the jersey's pulls a plug....

I never 'got' all the Governor Good Hair jokes. Yes, Rick Perry has nice hair but it is hardly ostentatious. I mean, it's not John Kerry hair or Trump hair.

President-elect Donald Trump is planning to nominate former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) to lead the Department of Energy, a transition official tells The Hill.

If the Senate confirms Perry as secretary of Energy, he would oversee a department whose main missions include research on emerging energy technologies, regulating energy efficiency, managing the nation’s nuclear weapons and building nuclear reactors for Navy vessels.

The Energy Department in the coming years faces numerous challenges regarding the future of nuclear energy, including whether to continue working toward a nuclear waste site at Yucca Mountain that nuclear power producers say they need in order to keep operating.

I really disliked (understatement) the tone of the primary campaign Trump ran. But his crack about Rick Perry wearing glasses so people will think he's smarter was pretty funny.

Is there any way at all to close this Department and return the role to the States?

We did not have this department until Jimmuh Carter decided it was necessary, and what has it done for us since then?
