John Bolton, the former US Ambassador to the United Nations, will be nominated by the Trump administration for Deputy Secretary of State according to NBC News.

Bolton is known for being a neoconservative hawk who still believes that the Iraq War was the right decision, saying in 2015:

Quote
“I still think the decision to overthrow Saddam was correct. I think decisions made after that decision were wrong, although I think the worst decision made after that was the 2011 decision to withdraw U.S. and coalition forces. The people who say, ‘Oh, things would have been much better if you didn’t overthrow Saddam,’ miss the point that today’s Middle East does not flow totally and unchangeably from the decision to overthrow Saddam alone.”

In addition, Bolton has been for regime change in Iran, Libya, and Syria.

The Deputy Secretary of State is the second highest position in the State Department and if the Secretary of State dies or resigns, they take over until the Senate can confirm another appointee.

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky) has noted his opposition to John Bolton on many occasions and it would be interesting to see how Paul will react to Trump going for Bolton as the Deputy Secretary of State instead of the Secretary of State.

Donald Trump chose Exxon Mobile CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State.

The current Deputy Secretary of State is Tony Blinken.

From TOWNHALL:

Ambassador John Bolton’s credentials in foreign policy are equally impressive. He has served in the State Department in two major capacities: Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs, and Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security. In the latter capacity, he recognized that arms control is a diplomatic vehicle that addresses only the symptoms of international tension and not its causes. He was also courageous enough to see and speak the truth about our adversaries’ constant violations of arms control agreements.

Amb. Bolton also served as a senior official at USAID, developing expertise in the often misunderstood and misguided policies of foreign assistance. Then, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, where he stoutly stood for the interests of the United States and our allies.

Amb. Bolton’s record of service makes one thing very clear: as Deputy Secretary, he will not be controlled by a Department that is manifestly skilled at controlling the agendas, information, and priorities of new political appointees there. Rather, as chief operating officer of the Department, he will ensure that the president and secretary of state’s agenda will be faithfully implemented and not delayed or derailed by the career bureaucracy (a risk that is likely to be faced by a nominee who does not have adequate knowledge of foreign policy issues or the ways of the State Department).

"Then, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, where he stoutly stood for the interests of the United States and our allies."

That alone is why Bolton should be Secretary of State instead of a businessman with no diplomatic experience.  We need an SOS who will look out for the US.  The last several SOSs have weakened the US on the world stage.

Bolton isn't going to be SoS...He's going to be the Deputy SoS...but don't worry you are going to love Trump's SOS.
