Well now it is a separate timeline..
Yes. I have read several articles about the new Star Trek movies. They consistently said that the backers, producers, and writers, of the new Start Treks felt no compulsion at all to maintain continuity with the previous series'. Essentially, they threw out everything which was Star-Treky, and started over. The only thing Star-Trekish about the new movies is the name and the general template. Everything else is new and redone. They wanted to make a Star Trek for the millennials, not for the old timer fans, Trekkers, like us.
When you are watching one of the new Star Trek movies, you have to look it at as simply watching a movie about space. It is somewhat related to Star Trek, but is not really a part of the Star Trek world.
Because it was made for millennials, they didn't feel the need to follow the rules of the Star Trek universe, as it has been since the 60s. It remains to be seen if Discovery will follow that same pattern or if they will maintain continuity with the series'.
