The lower pic of the 2 cows & a calf were rescued by farmers digging a path down from the isolated spit of pasture left by the quake--that cluster of livestock has been saved.

I believe, like limpets, they just hang on to the rock and are basic filter feeders.

That would be a waste of some really good food if those aren't harvested. The shells are a little on the gaudy side as 'mother of pearl' goes, but make great inlay, and are even made into jewelry.

I'm reminded by this uplift . . . I think there's some questionable to spurious . . . i.e. non-Biblical . . . predictions that land will arise off NZ's NW coasts that will more or less triple NZ's land area . . . or so, IIRC.

Time will tell.

Even the passable parts of the road are still quite a mess in lots of places.

Given the cliffs and aftershocks . . . I wonder how safe such a drive would be!

When Southern California suffers some big ones . . . the mess will be even worse. May God have mercy. Wow.

There's some big cracks in the roadway . . . 1-3 feet in many places, a yard or more in others . . . cracks with gaps where the earth spread apart . . . and places where uplifts were as much as a yard or more, or near it.

This was far from a minor event even though the loss of life was not great.

Welllllllllllllll, that's the end of this part of the drive--an uplift straight across the road blocks the way--about a yard high.

And now, a tunnel blocked by a land slip, blocks the way.

. . . using milk to irrigate pastures in some cases . . . {milk is 9X% water--I forget--97 or some such. Dad was a dairyman in his young adult life}

Dumping 14,000 litres of milk a day just on one farm . . . is a lot . . . daily dump with other farms in 6 figures . . . .

His grain silo with 20 tons of feed for his cows was also toppled over.

Generators have been flown in to keep the milking machines going. Glad that's answered. I was troubled by the prospect of their having to milk that many cows by hand with virtually no one knowing how. I {Qx} could milk a cow by hand--did it enough years--but I don't know any of my cohorts that could. But it would take so long that the evening milking would likely have to start right after the morning milking was done--since I couldn't imagine more than a handful of people able to help with it by hand.

And I remember when my 11 year old double cousin in Albuquerque was 100% convinced that milk came out of wells in the ground.

@Quix I read the comments, and the usual bunch tried to weigh in with how man was devastating the planet, etc. It was refreshing to see that commenters replied with intelligent comments about how the animals will adapt (those who aren't harvested and eaten, anyway, or which go to waste because the fisheries people won't allow people to exceed a catch limit). One decried Statoil for doing seismic surveys off the coast saying it would chase the whales away, but another said that likely the whales sensed the coming quakes and had quit the area anyway. (Statoil's data will provide information on changes to the geology offshore, at a time when the changes are fresh and the whales likely aren't close enough to be disturbed--at least when they decide to release it).
Most of the concern for the whales was simply due to economic impact because of the whale watching tourist industry, but at the moment harbor facilities have been severely reduced by the uplift, the town is basically cut off from land travel, and the industry and the whales will have to recover together. A seafood concern donated harvested seafood to feed people, otherwise, they said, the catch would go to waste anyway (no way to get it to market).

And the holding tanks for the seafood without electricity weren't going to last long in any healthy state, either.

It seems to me like the usual bureaucratic arrogance to prevent folks from harvesting as many of those out of the water as they could likely use. Sigh.

I've increasingly come to believe that bureaucracies and the bureaucratic 'mind-set' are among the world's greatest evils.

Will standing on the beach counting the number of abalone people pick up save any? Better they be eaten than just rot on the rocks--these were not even being harvested from the water, just picked up where they will die if not removed to the water where they can survive.

70.24% of the energy was released in the 7.8 quake with another 1.76% released in the aftershocks.

7.32% was released in 2016

1.46% in all of 2015

and 8.99% in all of 2010

Just how long would it have taken to teach groups of 40-50 volunteers how to correctly remove them from the rocks and into the water?

If the mortality rate for the exposed critters was 50% in relocation, but 100% if they were not moved, what is the better option? Stupid, stupid, stupid....
