The Importance of Building Long Range Stand-off Cruise Missiles
Adam Lowther

Adam B. Lowther is the director of the School of Advanced Nuclear Deterrence Studies at Kirtland Air Force Base and the editor of "Defending the Arsenal: Why America’s Nuclear Modernization Still Matters."

October 26, 2016

At a time when Russia and China are expanding their influence through aggressive action, nuclear weapons are playing a stabilizing role that limits and stabilizes these competitors.

Unfortunately, there are those in Washington, DC and academia who are now arguing that nuclear weapons are no longer critical to the nation’s security. Nuclear abolitionists often begin by arguing that the nation cannot afford to spend a “trillion” dollars to modernize the arsenal. This argument is disingenuous and misleading because it seeks to make Americans believe that the United States will spend this money in the next year or two, rather than over the next three decades as it is intended.
