2016: the year that turned me from a person with misanthropic tendencies into a full-blown misanthrope. I think I need to move to a cabin in Montana...

Don't feel bad. I had a storybook looking spot picked out in Santo Tomas in Baja to escape to. Then the cartels happened. So I just bought a VR headset. Close enough and allows me to escape the stupidity of reality on occasion.

My wife said something of the same sort yesterday, about going somewhere where there's land, and not a bunch of stupid people making stupid rules.

You could have knocked me over with a feather.

I spent a lot of time in Baja covering off-road racing and got to know a lot of great people down there. Once you get south of Ensenada, the entire character of the place changes. Well, at least it was that way. Don't know about now as it's been 15 years.

Great people, very relaxed lifestyle and no materialism to speak of. They are poor but they don't care. They are rich where it matters. They could not care any less about politics and just want to be left the hell alone.

Just got back from Idaho...that looks like a good place to start if you want to go Galt.

lol

The best we could come up with is a list of places where people's jobs or lifestyles have to deal with real consequences, and where, therefore, there is a low tolerance for BS.

Guess you forgot to pop into the other thread where Trump goes from room to room having sex with teenage girls.  How many STD's does he have?

Do you have proof he actually did that?

I think I need to move to a cabin in Montana...

My good buddy is headed there...contract already signed.  I'm going to miss him, but mostly I envy him!

He was originally considering New Zealand (in all seriousness).

I'm still running incandescents. I have a 'stash'. What just gobsmacked me about one of the ridiculous arguments against the incandescent bulb was the ballyhoo about 'waste heat'. At this latitude, in summer we have up to 16 hours of daylight, and don't generate much heat illuminating things. In winter, we have daylight for as little as 8 hours and 21 minutes, when no heat is wasted. Nearest big town: http://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/williston

I used to argue that point, but looked into the calculations EPA ran of energy savings.  They actually took "waste heat" into consideration for reduced furnace needs.  The energy savings is real, though I'm switching to LED from CFL and incandescents.

I have some "problem fixtures" where incandescent bulbs tend to burn out at an alarming rate.  No idea why.  Putting LED bulbs in those spots seems to have solved the problem.  Unfortunately, I don't really like the quality of the light from the LED bulbs....

Every time the Australian Army holds open enlistment opportunities for people from other countries...my friends down under in the Army send me the application.

The crazier our Army gets the more I seriously consider it.

My daughter enlisted fully intent on being a lifer. She bailed after 8 with more accomplishments than many 20 year guys. Loved her job. Flatly refused to deal with the social justice/engineering BS. Many of her peers told her she was insane. Within a year every one was asking her for advice on transitioning out to Civ life. They all had enough as well. Just took them a bit longer.

The worse the Libs treat the military the easier it gets to drop my paperwork in 18 months and call it quits at 20.

I had a pump house where a couple of 100 watt incandescent lights would keep my pump and water lines from freezing at up to 20 degrees below. Try that with LEDs. I think there is a need for all sources.

Oh no, he didn't do any of it.  Every single accusation is a lie.

AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.

On a similar note, a few years back the local road crew began switching traffic lights from incandescent to LED. To their surprise, they began having problems with blowing snow collecting on the lights, rendering them invisible.  Turns out that the old lights were self-defrosting, and the cooler LED versions were not.....  There are simple workarounds, and the LED version saves a bunch of money, but it was an amusing unintended consequence.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
