.
Freedom in the United States today is a moving target, and when the government catches wind of an innovation that makes life easier and more affordable for ordinary people, it always steps in to take control. Take, for example, the growing effort to outlaw offgrid living in the U.S., as well as moves by local governments around the country to criminalize private rainwater collection.
.
Now, the federal government is making a major move against the tiny house movement, seeking to give the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) authority to require tiny houses to conform to the standards of recreational vehicles (RV’s), of which one of the rules is that the vehicles may not be used or marketed for permanent living. HUD is seeking to regulate tiny house living out of existence or to turn it into a regulated industry by requiring that tiny homes be manufactured in factories, conforming to codified standards.
.
The tiny house movement is one of the latest innovations in personal freedom from an overly consumeristic and a debt-driven society. Many people construct tiny houses themselves, often but not always on wheels, for a fraction of the cost of typical housing. In a tiny home, one has everything needed  to live a comfortable life, but in a tiny space often less than a couple of hundred square feet. They park them in hospitable places and enjoy life without a mortgage and everything else you need to fill and maintain a big American house.

HOW DUPLICITOUS AND OUTRAGEOUS . . . the tyrannical jerks.

In an era when the PC blather is CONSUME LESS, DOWNSIZE, TREAD LIGHTLY ON THE ENVIRONMENT . . . they are increasingly throwing a fit at TINY HOUSES???????

Obviously--they don't want serfs and slaves to live OFF GRID . . . they have long planned to house the dumbed down serfs and slaves in Soviet style concrete apartment complexes/rabbit warrens of despair. Tiny houses are not part of their 5 year Marxist plans.

Sheesh.

I used to think that tiny houses were more than a little small, for me. But I've done well enough in a single wide for more than a decade. And there's a lot to be said for not collecting stuff and keeping a smaller space cleaner.

ABX:
Odd approach. These things are basically rebranded mobile homes so they should call under those guidelines, not RV guidelines.

Oceander:
It's not unreasonable for these houses to be subjected to the same rules that apply to trailers, RVs, and mobile homes.  I've seen some of those things being built, and as trailers some are almost certainly substandard.

Certainly things on the road need to be road worthy.
Certainly there needs to be a minimum of safety design features to avoid unnecessary fire risk, gas risk etc.

However, bureaucracies and governments may begin reasonably but quickly morph into very tyrannical umpteen thousand page law sorts of junk . . . I don't support that carp in the least.

Shrillery has been many orders of magnitude more abusive in her actions as well as her words toward women than Trump on his worst 100 days.

I think that's tolerable . . . providing it doesn't force tiny homes into an Airstream design format. I think creativity needs to be relatively free as long as its safe, imho.
