Rove: Trump Needs to Play for 'Inside Straight' – a Big State

Donald Trump needs to make a move for a big state if he has any chance of capturing enough electoral votes to win the presidency, GOP operative Karl Rove said Monday.
But Trump has been operating counter to that theory, campaigning in states with few electoral votes – or in states where he appears to have little chance. Monday night he was in Wisconsin, which is in the leans-Democrat category with three weeks until Election Day.
In an appearance Monday on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor," Rove said he would not send Trump to Wisconsin if he were involved in his campaign.
"He has got to play the inside straight. He has got to try to get a big state," Rove said.
"Maybe that big state is Wisconsin. They have got better data than I have probably got access to."
Pennsylvania makes more sense, Rove said, because Trump has been closer to Democrat Hillary Clinton there at times. "If you have been close once maybe you can get close again."
Trump also must switch to running a "real campaign" focusing on issues rather than tweeting at rivals such as a former Miss Universe and fellow Republicans, he said.
"Pick out three, maybe four, and stay on them," he said, adding that Trump must depict himself as the agent of change on a daily basis.
"Last Wednesday, the governor of Minnesota, a Democrat, a very liberal Democrat, came out and said Obamacare is unsustainable and unaffordable," Rove said.
"If I were the Trump campaign, I would have jumped on that and gone all out the next day saying even a Democrat who believed in this program in the beginning realizes... got to do that each and every day."
