The pilot of a small plane that crashed near an aerospace factory in Connecticut, killing a passenger, reportedly confessed that the crash wasn’t an accident.

The FBI is now investigating whether the Tuesday crash in East Hartford was intentional, law enforcement officials told The New York Times.

The Piper PA 34 crashed near a Pratt & Whitney around 3:40 p.m., on its final approach to Hartford-Brainard Airport. Officials said the small plane took off from the airport’s flight school.

The pilot — who was treated for serious burns — has not been identified.

But officials said the passenger — 28-year-old Feras M. Freitekh, of Orland Hills, Ill. — was killed. Freitekh had been issued a private pilot license in May 2015 and was certified to fly single-engine planes.  ...

... Police were at an apartment house on Annawan Street in Hartford late Tuesday and Wednesday, searching with dogs and wearing protective gear, the boyfriend of a resident of the three-building complex said. Sources said the person killed in the crash was staying at the location.

Eric Bass, who lives nearby, said the complex has a number of apartments rented out by area flight schools for flight students. He said the students who lived there are from foreign countries, although he did not know where. He said four students lived in the building where his girlfriend lives. Bass did not say whether police took anything out of the apartment. The complex was not evacuated.

Flight students also stay in an apartment on nearby Essex Street, which city records indicate is owned by local flight school owner Arian Prevalla. A neighbor at 32 Essex St. said the owner of unit E frequently rents to trainees at Brainard Airport, typically young men who stay for months at a time. The unit has so much turnover, she said, that an "unoccupied" label remains marked on the front door for that unit.

Two men had recently been living there, she said, though she didn't have their names. The head of the condominium association was not immediately available for comment.

The men live on the top floor of the Essex Street building. No one answered the door at the unit Wednesday morning. ...

The crash survivor told investigators that it was not an accident, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing, according to the Times.

A student and instructor were aboard the twin-engine aircraft when it took off from Hartford-Brainard Airport in Hartford, East Hartford Mayor Marcia Leclerc said. The Piper PA-34 Seneca struck a utility pole and wires, knocking out power to the area, and was immediately engulfed in flames, witnesses said.    ...

... The instructing pilot, who is awake in hospital and speaking with police but has not been named, said that his student Freitekh had crashed the plane on purpose, law enforcement sources told the Times.

'As far as the occupants of the plane, he is expected to survive. He is cooperating with investigators he's actually speaking with detectives as part of this investigation as ongoing,' said East Hartford Police Lt. Josh Litwin, the Hartford Courant reports.

Freitekh came to the U.S. from Jordan in 2012 to go to flight school. He later attended a language school in Toledo, Ohio.

Federal Aviation Administration records show he was issued a private pilot certificate on May 29, 2015, and was certified to fly a single-engine plane.   ...

The FBI is investigating claims a Jordanian student pilot intentionally crashed a light aircraft, killing himself and injuring three others.

The Piper PA 34 was being flown by Feras M. Freitekh and his instructor, Arian Prevalla, when it crashed on Main Street in East Hartford at around 3.45pm on Tuesday, resulting in what one witness described as a 'mushroom cloud explosion.'

Student pilot Freitekh, 28, a Jordanian national, was killed in the crash while Prevalla was rushed to hospital with serious burns. Two people in a minivan close to the landing site were also hospitalized.

The FBI is now investigating whether the crash, near aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor Pratt & Whitney's headquarters was intentional, after the instructor claimed the plane was intentionally crashed.

The pair had been arguing moments before the crash after Freitekh told Prevella he did not want to fly the plane any longer, a law enforcement source told theHartford Courant.

Foreign student from middle east comes here as a student for the sole purpose of learning to be a pilot. Funny that sounds so familiar. Why on the name of everything holy do we still allow them to come to learn to be pilots? We have a Muslim president that is why they are allowed still he has really screwed up this country in so many ways it will never recover.
