« on: October 03, 2016, 04:04:14 am »

Welcome to the TBR Garden Thread for the week of October 2nd, 2016!

This is the place to discuss all things garden - what you grow, your techniques, successes failures, questions, thing you'd like to try or did. If it's growing related, inside or out, it's not off topic. Articles and links are welcome, and most certainly pictures!

Variety of the Week

Country Gentleman Corn
Country Gentleman sweet corn is the variety of the week. An old heirloom that was my grandmothers favorite. I surprised her one time with it and she lit up like a little kid. This was the white corn variety of preference for the higher end frozen vegetable brands for years because of it's ability to freeze well and taste. A shoepeg corn, it doesn't have neat rows of kernels, but are random over the ear. The best white corn variety available in my opinion, it has a perfect light flavor that is excellent buttered, cut or on the ear.

You find Country Gentleman at Burpee, Seed Savers Exchange, Baker Creek, and a number of other vendors.

The fall projects continue as we get ready for winter. Still waiting on a number of things to finish up, mainly the dry beans and some late summer planted pearl millet. The heavy rains and warm summer really extended the season on things which usually would wrap up a month ago. Fall  greens are nearly up to size for picking, and the roots about half grown. Waiting for some frost on things like the brussels sprouts, parsley root, and sugar beet while doing the last hilling of dirt around the leeks. Meanwhile, much of the garden is now fall tilled.

Planted the salad greens for the winter hoop tunnel, the basics of which are outlined in an earlier posted article:

I will be building mine in the coming weeks and will show pics of my setup.

Since fall is soil building time, I'm also getting ready for my first experiment this fall for making biochar, organic that is burned slowly with little air to make charcoal, that is then tilled into the soil. Biochar is an ancient soil building practice that helps to multiply good soil organisms, plus retain nutrients and manage moisture.

I have an old cast iron bath tub that I plan to fill with wood chunks and then cover with some sheet metal, while in a meantime put a pipe in the inlet hole to give limited air. Will keep everyone updated with pics on success or failure.

In the meantime, a couple of links and video:
