Pregnant heroin addict to remain jailed until giving birth; judge wants treatment plan

A pregnant Pleasant Grove mother who is addicted to heroin today was ordered to remain behind bars to keep her from using the drug until her baby is born.

Alexandra Laird, 21, was indicted earlier this year after her newborn baby girl was born addicted to heroin. Pregnant again, she was arrested earlier this month after authorities say she admitted to using heroin three times a day while being pregnant. She is estimated to be between 18 to 20 weeks along in her pregnancy.

After a two hour bond hearing today, Jefferson County Judge David Hobdy denied Laird's request for bail. "This court is very concerned about the welfare of the unborn child,'' Hobdy said.
