Power hungry Obama gobbles up more land ... this time under the Atlantic Ocean

President Obama continued his land-seizing spree this week by declaring nearly 5,000 miles off the coast of Cape Cod a “national marine monument.” This marks a first for the Atlantic Ocean, and means that the “Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument” is now federal property....

...To date, President Obama has seized over 548 million acres of American water and land for the federal government, per National Park Service numbers. According the 1906 Antiquities Act, he has almost unfettered authority to do so — the only limits on presidential power in seizing land pertain to Wyoming and Alaska.

While Sierra Club environmentalists are over the moon about Obama’s latest land-seizing spree, the commercial fishing industry is not happy about the creation of the new marine monuments. Jon Williams, president of the Atlantic Red Crab company in Massachusetts told The Washington Post that the new monument off Cape Cod is “[A] big blow to us” and “I think the entire New England fishery is upside down over this.” (Red crab and lobster boats will be allowed to fish in the area for the next seven years, after which it will be outlawed.)

The Washington Post also reports that the fishing industry affected by this new marine monument is worth more than $50 million — and major changes to the way commercial fishermen make their livelihood have to be made because of a stroke by the executive pen...
