Sacrifice by the numbers: The shocking facts from 15 years of war

It feels like it’s been forever, and yet, somehow it also feels like yesterday when all of America stopped in horror on a clear September day. Flights were halted, the bustle of life stopped, and thousands of people’s lives were forever changed as 2,996 died as a result of the terror attacks.

But, those planes were just the beginning of a ripple effect that we are still experiencing today.

In the 15 years since September 11, thousands of service members have deployed in support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those deployments add up to years’ worth of time spent away from their spouses, their children and their homes.
