Examining Politics Podcast: Top Republican strategist on how the GOP lost control and ended up with 'Democrat' Trump
By David M. Drucker (@DavidMDrucker) • 9/8/16 3:00 AM

A top Republican strategist is urging party leaders to take more control over the nominating process at all levels to preclude a replay of 2016 four years from now.

Josh Holmes, confidant to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and adviser to Republican Senate candidates, said in an interview with "Examining Politics" that GOP leaders have been too cowed by conservative critics in the media and third-party outside groups.

That has led to the Republican Party losing control of its brand and the ability to nominate electable candidates that reflect the party's values. In particular, that is why Republicans ended up with Donald Trump as the party's presidential nominee.

They say this every four years. And yet every four years, the least-liked candidate keeps getting voted into the nomination.

More control isn't going to fix this.
