Italian authorities fear the Mafia have infiltrated the building trade and are set to profit from the clean-up after last week's devastating earthquake.

Prosecutors are already investigating whether negligence or fraud in adhering to building codes played a role in the high death toll after the disaster in central Italy.

Nearly 300 died when the quake flattened three medieval towns near the rugged Apennines while more than 400 were injured.

Now there are fears organised crime will try to infiltrate lucrative construction contracts to eventually rebuild the picturesque towns.
