Renowned retired Marine Corps General James Mattis spoke out against isolationism and nation-building at Washington State University on Tuesday, saying that the next president should be familiar with American history to avoid repeating mistakes.

According to The Lewiston Tribune, the general spoke to around 200 people earlier this week at Washington State University, saying that while military experience isn’t a requirement for the presidency, the person elected into the role should be familiar with American history and work to curb the nation’s “always present appetite for isolationism.”

A Washington native, Mattis spent four decades in the US Marines with extensive time in the Middle East. Making a name for himself during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Mattis (who was known as the “Warrior Monk” and went by the callsign “Chaos”) was very popular with Marines, eventually finding his way as the commander of the United States Central Command.
