Gitmo closure plan eludes White House
By Nicole Duran (@Duranni1) • 8/26/16 12:01 AM

The Obama administration made it clear Thursday that it still wants the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, closed before President Obama leaves office, but had no explanation for how it would achieve that goal, especially in light of federal law that effectively prevents its closure.

Vice President Joe Biden opened the Gitmo can of worms during a stop in Stockholm on Thursday, and when the White House was pressed on the issue, it could only stress that it would try as hard as it could to get it done.

Biden expects Guantanamo to close by January
By Nicole Duran (@Duranni1) • 8/25/16 10:36 AM

Vice President Joe Biden said he expects the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to be closed when he and President Obama exit office at the end of January.

It is "my hope and expectation" that it "will be closed before I leave office," Biden said Thursday during a news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven in Stockholm.

This month, the Obama administration transferred 15 prisoners to the United Arab Emirates, which reduced the prison's population to 61.
