The 21st Century’s 100 greatest films

Quote
...Film-making today, whether massively expensive or made with tiny budgets, shot on celluloid or video, is thriving artistically as much as it ever has. But today you’ll find greater diversity in the kinds of films being made, if not in the people who are making them. That’s why we, the editors of BBC Culture, decided to commission a poll of critics to determine the 100 greatest films of the 21st Century. Last year, we asked critics to name the greatest American films of all time, and we were surprised that only six films made since 2000 made the top 100. Is there a feeling that time sanctifies a classic? Perhaps. But this time, we wanted to prove that this century has given us films that will stand the test of time, that you will continue to think about and argue about if only you give them a chance and watch them...

@geronl

PC libs, they had to throw a bunch of foreign ones in for appearances. 99% are foreign to the BBC, of course. :p

Most of them, to my eye, seem to be gloomy, moody, dystopian movies.

Not only do they not make them like they used to, they don't film them like they used to. Since purchasing an HD tv eight years ago, I've noticed many of the color films of fifty-sixty years ago made in Technicolor look spectacular with HD. Then I watch some of the modern movies with their lousy scripts and made with washed out-gloomy looking film. Not only are the stories awful, they look awful
And modern remakes are awful. I saw "3:10 To Yuma" with Russell Crowe, and it stank to high heaven. I practically laughed out loud at many of the ridiculous scenes.
There have been a few good modern flicks (Slumdog Millionaire for one), but for the most part I'm resigned to watching my favorite old flicks over and over. I've seen "Bad Day At Black Rock" about ten times in the last five years, and I still enjoy it every time. Ditto for "It's A M,M,M,M World" and the original "The Producers" with Zero Mostel.  I regard Mostel's performance in that film as the single funniest performance by any actor in all the films I've seen in my life.....and I've seen many thousands.

Interesting observation!
I am an admitted old fogey (66). But it's not like i don't like modern flicks or tv shows just because I'm a crotchety, old bast...d. I think "Breaking Bad" was the best thing ever produced by tv.  But I'll admit to not watching many modern flicks. It started about 20 years ago when I noticed many modern films had vacant plots and something was screwy about the color. Nevertheless, I thought "Fargo" and "The Shawshank Redemption" were great flicks.
 But many touted movies I found wanting. Things just got worse in the new century.  I have seen some good modern movies, but most of them are short on plot and long on special effects and p.c. themes.  And this whole thing with women turned into superhuman tough guys is just laughable. It seems every new action movie or tv show has to show physically small women beating the heck out of huge men twice their size. There are other p.c. manifestations that I don't like.

Wow, I have only seen 9 of those (6 in the bottom half), and two were cartoons.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I'm surprised that nothing from Studio Ghilbi was on the list.

Spirited Away was amazing.

Wolf Children, too.

And the Tale of Princess Kaguya looks to be a masterpiece.  It's based of the tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
