A new poll from Rasmussen Reports shows that likely voters approve of temporary restrictions on immigration from countries with a history of terrorism.
When asked "Do you favor or oppose" a temporary ban on immigration from "the most dangerous and volatile regions of the world that have a history of exporting terrorism," voters responded:
In favor: 59 percent;
Oppose: 32 percent;
Not sure: 19 percent.
When asked about "implementing a screening test" for those trying to enter the country:
In favor: 73 percent;
Oppose: 18 percent;
Not sure: 9 percent.
And when asked how likely they think a test is to reduce the number of terrorists entering the country:
Very likely: 27 percent;
Somewhat likely: 34 percent;
Not very likely: 24 percent;
Not at all likely: 10 percent;
Not sure: 6 percent.
Separately, a Morning Consult poll shows that immigrants in the U.S. agree with Trump's plan for a screening test as well.
Support: 61 percent;
Oppose: 29 percent;
Unsure: 10 percent.
More than half of immigrants — 64 percent — also supported Trump's call to collaborate with Russia to defeat the Islamic State, and to temporarily ban immigration from countries with a history of terrorism, although about half of immigrants opposed Trump's proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall.
Rasmussen contacted 1,000 likely voters Aug.17-18, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. Morning Consult contacted 2,001 registered voters online Aug. 16-17, with a margin of error of +/- 2 percentage points.
