The Trump Campaign Jumps the Shark

By Erick Erickson  |  August 17, 2016, 08:19am

The Trump campaign is undergoing another major shakeup as we get closer to the election. This time the Trump team is bringing Breitbart Chief Steve Bannon onboard from the Trump propaganda arm. Maybe Breitbart will show up in FEC disclosures. Maybe.

Bannon, according to the media, is encouraging Trump to go full on nationalist-populist, in other words take the campaign further into the gutter with fear and division. Instead of giving people someone to vote for, they’ll try to give people a reason to not vote for Hillary.

I suspect all this will do is drive more people away from Trump other than non-college educated white men. Many of those who have in recent days come to terms with voting for Trump will be given yet another reason to second guess that decision.

Bannon coming onto the Trump campaign is just a doubling down on crazy. It means the Trump campaign has not really learned any lessons, does not really recognize its message is not a winning message, and it’s just going to go out in a blaze of conspiracy theory and bitterness.

We are now moving beyond a dumpster fire. We’re more at Chernobyl. The only thing that’ll be coming out of the Trump campaign by November are three headed rats, which is kind of fitting.

You need to really absorb this Robert Costa report on the shakeup.

While Trump respects Manafort, the aides said, he has grown to feel “boxed in” and “controlled” by people who barely know him. Moving forward, he plans to focus intensely on rousing his voters at rallies and through media appearances.…

In Bannon especially, Trump is turning to an alter ego — a colorful, edgy figure on the right who has worked at Goldman Sachs and made several films, including a documentary about former Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

Bannon, in phone calls and meetings, has been urging Trump for months to not mount a fall campaign that makes Republican donors and officials comfortable, the aides said. Instead, Bannon has been telling Trump to run more fully as an outsider and an unabashed nationalist.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with info about Manafort and his Russian handlers coming to light.

AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.

I'm sure all his Alt-Right, Neo-Nazi, White Supremacist fanboys that follow and re-tweet Trump on Twitter will be ecstatic.  Trump will probably return re-Tweeting them too.

I've seen this before.  It is the "tightening the inner circle" phase.... when malignant narcissists sense they're in trouble they begin limiting their personal interactions to people who they know will support them, whatever they say or do.  (Obama being another case in point.)

Manafort, for all his undoubted faults, is a political pro who knows what Trump ought to be doing.  But of course, any attempts to rein in Trump will be interpreted as disloyalty, and he must therefore be pushed out.

And it sounds like Steve Bannon is the sort of guy who is more than willing to give Trump his head.

Perfect.

Unlike Some politicians, Trump's "aides" wouldn't talk to the press.

If you can't name the aides, you have no story :nono:
