It makes sense, in a weird way, because Trump keeps casting about for ways to end the madness without getting branded as the "loser". Such as declaring, before Labor Day, that the election results will be rigged. Such as pointedly declining to endorse down-ticket Republicans and causing a crapstorm. Such as picking fights with Gold Star parents. Such as refusing to spend money on ads and using his latest campaign contributions to pay down previous debt - much of it owed to himself.
The jury's out on the stupidity of Trump supporters, but as for the man himself, I think he's plenty smart - smart enough to know things aren't going to end well. I think he's looking for an exit that will help him save face.
