If the best argument is just to fear the alternative, that is a sign the argument is lost. At that, Argument From Adverse Consequences (ie, Appeal To Fear, Scare Tactics) is generally recognized as one of the main fallacious argument tactics.

I know one thing. With Cruz Walker or just about anyone other than Trump we wouldn't be looking at states like Texas on the verge of flipping with Clinton leading in places like Utah.

That's for sure.   I don't think the "well, at least he's better than Hillary" argument is very effective, and it's basically the only thing the Trump crowd has.
Character still matters.  It always matters.
