The soon-to-be commissioned USS Montgomery has picked up another passenger for its maiden voyage: the 124-year-old bell of the first USS Montgomery.

The bell's involvement in the Sept. 10 commissioning of the new USS Montgomery began when Chairman of Commissioning Steve Jones was doing research on the latest ship's predecessor, an unprotected cruiser completed in 1891 and commissioned in 1894. That USS Montgomery served in the Spanish-American War and was the first naval ship to bear the name of Alabama's capital.

I like that.

Got to grant the Navy credit where its due - they really know how to do continuity and tradition.
