Egypt: After years of torture and harassment, Christian convert returns to Islam

Hegazy has been harassed, tortured, and unjustly imprisoned. No one can say he would not break under such circumstances. And since Islam mandates that those who leave Islam be executed, his years of harsh treatment are, paradoxically, mild compared to what he would have gotten had Egyptian authorities decided to follow Islamic law scrupulously. But his treatment also shows that the Egyptian guarantees of religious freedom are worthless: even if Islamic law is not fully implemented in Egypt, it still wields an enormously strong influence in Egyptian society, and its courtrooms.
