Remembering the Dukakis 17 point lead over Bush.

Remembering the Dukakis 17 point lead over Bush.

The Dukakis campaign could have been forgiven for humming a few bars of Hail to the Chief.

Here is the New York Times on July 26, 1988:

Dukakis Lead Widens, According to New Poll

The Times story began this way:

Quote
In the aftermath of the Democratic National Convention, the party’s nominee, Michael S. Dukakis, has expanded his lead among registered voters over Vice President Bush, the probable Republican nominee, according to a Gallup Poll.

This was among the findings of a national public opinion poll of 948 registered voters conducted late last week for Newsweek magazine by the Gallup Organization. The telephone interviews took place on July 21, which was the last night of the convention, and on the night after that.

Fifty-five percent of the 948 registered voters interviewed in the poll said they preferred to see Mr. Dukakis win the 1988 Presidential election, while 38 percent said they preferred to see Mr. Bush win. The poll had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

This represented a shift in Mr. Dukakis’s lead from the 47 percent to 41 percent advantage he held in the last pre-convention Gallup Poll, taken by telephone July 8-10. In that poll, 1,001 registered voters were interviewed.

This was prior to the wildly successful 1988 Republican convention.  George HW Bush took the lead immediately.

You can't count on Hillary to get in a tank and look goofy (that's more of a Trump trick) or have a Willie Horton in her background (she doesn't).

Absent a major terrorist attack on American soil, what will change the narrative that Trump is unhinged?  Especially if he continues to prove it on a daily basis?

The fact is, this race can't be won by making the other guy look bad. Both of them are already hated.

The only way to really get an edge is to make themselves look like they're competent and hope that some of the people currently planning on voting third-party or staying home to their side.

This election is about which one can screw up the least before Nov. will be the winner.

Right now, Trump is losing that contest but it's still early.

And comparing 1980 or 1988 to today is laughable

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Bush post convention ran a smart and tough campaign. Trump has become unhinged, still allowing his pie-hole to get him in trouble. And its not over yet. It will get worse.

Sorry, won't happen, her rear is too big to fit inside a tank.

I would not be surprised to see it, he seems to be intent on beating Dukakis and shaving 18% off his current lousy poll numbers...although in Trump's case I expect the tank to be replaced with the OscarMeyer Wienermobile...

I guess the Trumpsters only hope is a guy locked in a basement of an Embassy in London, surely HE can take Hellary down!!!

They apparently are unwilling to do it.

Hope that works out for them, I guess.

I believe Trump would be easier to Impeach (and convict) than hellary (the first vag*na), no matter if the GOP gets wiped out down ticket or not.
No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

She don' need no tank -- just a camouflage pantsuit!
