A chief petty officer has become the first woman to earn the Navy's "silver dolphins," signaling an enlisted sailor qualified to serve aboard a submarine.

Chief culinary specialist Dominique Saavedra will deploy aboard the nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine Michigan in coming months, the first sub to deploy with a crew including enlisted female sailors.

According to an announcement from Submarine Group 9, out of Puget Sound, Washington, Saavedra received her pin at a ceremony Tuesday, marking a major milestone for female sailors.

The first group of enlisted women to serve on board a Navy submarine is preparing to sail on the USS Michigan.

The Kitsap Sun says the guided-missile sub, whose homeport is Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, was recently reconfigured to include living quarters for up to three female chief petty officers and 36 female crew members.

Shipyard and ship crews enlarged the forward washroom, added four showers and created a new bunkroom. The Navy estimates the reconfiguration cost about $6

I bet it was more than $6 bucks. Besides aren't all the heads and showers co-ed now? Isn't that what Obama tried to force on schools?

Sorry, I missed "million" in my cut-n-paste.  From another source:

http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/local/enlisted-women-nearing-first-submarine-patrol-3760a73a-faa0-7d9a-e053-0100007f4153-386716721.html

The Navy in June 2015 announced the names of four chief petty officers and 34 lower-ranked sailors who were selected for USS Michigan gold and blue crews. They were chosen from 113 applicants. The two crews are comprised of 15 officers and about 140 enlisted sailors each.

Female officers — three per crew — have served aboard some Ohio-class subs, including the Michigan, since as early as 2011, but no structural changes were needed for them. That's far from the case with female enlisted living quarters.

The shipyard, USS Michigan builder Electric Boat and the ship's crew enlarged the forward washroom, added four showers by converting a bunkroom into shower space, split the aft washroom to allow for a shower and head combination and a watchstander head, and created a new bunkroom from the old crew's study, the Navy said.

The two or three chiefs will share a living space and washroom. The others will split into nine-person bunk rooms and share a head.

The Navy estimated the cost of the reconfiguration at about $6 million.

Probably safe on the sub then?

There is nothing new about this. Women have been prominent participants in submarine races ever since the invention of the buggy.

While in college I worked at a local  bar and if you saw what some reasonable attractive men went home with at 2:30 a.m. this gal is not safe.

TBH I broke some long dry spells with gals I would not be caught with in daylight around friends..

I would hope they don't have bars on the sub.

All the men have to do is say they identify as women and then they get to shower and bunk with her.

Then why don't they bunk together?  It is sexist to have them separated according to liberals.
