Thank you. FUD is just internet short hand for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. In this context, for Trump supporters to disregard what had been previously established conservative doctrine, they had to throw their hands in the air, shrug their shoulders and act like everything they've been taught to believe has been called into question. They sowed so much confusion about what is a conservative principle, and who is a conservative that it gave them cover to put forward Trump. And because they sowed all that FUD about conservatism they were able to bob and weave when confronted by people who actually hold conservative positions. And that's how Cruz became a pariah and Trump a savior. And soon enough, being a union-supporting trade protectionist became a conservative position. Along with expanding the scope and power of federal government to regulate business. Pro-life issues were cast aside and Trump supporters adopted the mantra of the GOPe. Essentially telling pro-life conservatives, "get in the back of the bus, we'll get to that later. The country is immediate danger. We can't afford the luxury of your SoCon positions." This even extends to Libertarian foreign policy positions. Agitating the withdrawal from NATO unless the member states pay their fair share, etc. All this because Trump supporters figured out that the only way to make their candidate palatable was to muddy the waters on what it means to be a conservative.
For some reason, I kept thinking of a FOD walk.
