 Trump Reshapes the Republican Party
Vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence bows to Trumpism.
By George Will — July 23, 2016

Crucial political decisions often concern which bridges to cross and which to burn. Donald Trump’s dilemma is that he burns some bridges by the way he crosses others. His campaign depends on a low-probability event, and on his ability to cause this event without provoking a more-than-equal and opposite reaction.

Extrapolating from recent elections, the turnout of non-college-educated whites this November would be expected to be 3 percent smaller as a portion of the total turnout than in 2012, and college-educated whites a 1 percent larger portion. The core of Trump’s support consists of non-college-educated whites, a cohort whose 2012 turnout was 60.4 percent. There is a low probability that Trump can motivate recent non-voters in this cohort to increase the turnout to 67 percent. There is, however, a high probability that the way he stimulates such people — still more insult oratory and fact-free “policy” expostulations — will cause other groups to recoil.

For the first time since at least 1952 — the first election for which ample data is available — Democrats probably will win a majority of voters with college degrees — a large and growing group (In 1952, 6.4 percent of Americans had completed college; today, about 33 percent have.) Consider, particularly, women with post-bachelor degrees. This fast-growing group — the percentages of women in law, medical, and business schools’ enrollments are 48.7, 46.9, and 36.2, respectively — is already approximately 65 percent Democratic. Can Trump ignite a spike in the non-college white vote without causing a more-than-commensurate increase in the Democratic propensity of the college-educated?

As Trump’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, says, Trump “has changed the face of the Republican party” just as Ronald Reagan did. Indeed. A snarl has replaced the sunny Southern California smile. Trump, himself a brand, has completed the rebranding of the Republican party.

Trump, today, has a much smaller party in real terms than George W. Bush had, than Mitt Romney had.  And it will get smaller with this certifiable idiot at its head.

We are now guaranteed either Hillary Clinton's shrill maoism or Donald Trump's incoherent bumbling populism.

For the next four years. There will be no other outcomes.

Some future.

Pointy heads like George Will, PhD. have been entirely wrong so far, concerning the success of the Trump paradigm shift which only he saw possible.

College today is like high school a few decades back. In many cases it simply indicates somebody foolish enough, to seek a worthless degree, and pile on student debt. Not to mention many "affirmative action" college attendees.

Meanwhile a great many non-four year degree jobs, pay well. Computer and health care are two examples of such fields.

Trump has exceeded expectations, thus far. Little reason he would stop, now.

Doesn't matter what he stands for or what ridiculous nonsense he spews.  Different tax rates for different companies, pulling out of NATO and the WTO,  funding a SuperPac against John Kasich (when Kasich is term limited).

Nobody even has to say it anymore. You Trump supporters know what you are.

Up until about eight months ago, it was common talk in this forum that it was useless for anyone to try and run as a "3rd-party" candidate for the presidency, because they simply couldn't win in a 2-party system.

George Wallace shook things up back in the late sixties.
And H. Ross Perot took a pretty good swing at it back in '92.
But neither of them could win.

Yet Donald Trump has done exactly that this year.
No, he didn't specifically run under the auspices of a "third party".
But - he ran AS IF he actually was a 3rd-party candidate vis-a-vis "the brand-name" Republicans. He created an entirely new set of rules, and ran the rest of 'em ragged.

Mr. Trump's "third party" surrounded the "conventional Republicans" and co-opted their entire  primary election apparatus. And now he has transformed the Republican party into -HIS- vehicle by which to run for president, whether they like it or not.

I sense that this, more than anything else, has the n'ertrumpers so agitated that they froth and foam at the mouth at the mere mention of his name in this forum.
(Aside: watch for that frothin' and foamin' in response to this post.)

THAT's "the reshaping" that Donald Trump has achieved.

And I sense that's why some would prefer that he lose to Hillary, and may even vote to that end.

They want to return to the status quo.
That is, to being a principled bunch....   of losers.
