Drive-by shooting led to chase, officer's death in Kansas City, KS

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A KCK police officer who was shot and killed came after officers responded to a drive-by shooting, Police Chief Terry Zeigler said.

Authorities say Capt. Robert Dave Melton died while reporting on an armed disturbance call.

Melton was shot in his patrol car as he was approaching a group of individuals that matched the suspects' description of that call.

Zeigler said the shooting happened at 22nd Street and Haskell Avenue following an armed disturbance call at 1:33 p.m. An individual said three or four parties were shooting in his direction.

Officers arrived on the scene at 1:37 p.m. Melton was shot at 1:58 p.m., according to police. He attempted to make contact with another suspect in the area.

He was brought to the University of Kansas Hospital before 2:30 p.m. Efforts to resuscitate him did not work, according to trauma surgeon James Howard.

Police on scene say the officer responded alone to a shots fired call. Officer Tom Tomasic said on the scene multiple suspects are in custody.

Police are searching the area of 18th and Parallel Parkway. The FBI is also on the scene investigating.

The ATF has arrived at Juniper Gardens at Second Street and Edgerton Drive, where the original disturbance occurred. A witness told KCTV5 four gun shots were fired, then three more after the car left the scene.

A group of men fired two gunshots from a sedan at a pair of cops on foot patrol Tuesday in Brooklyn — missing both and unleashing a swift dragnet, police sources said.

The officers, a man and woman assigned to the 70th Precinct, were patrolling on E. 23rd St. near Flatbush and Ditmas Aves. in Flatbush at about 10:40 p.m. when a black Nissan four-door sedan approached them, cop sources said.

Someone inside fired one shot. As the car drove off, an occupant fired off a parting shot, cops said. Both officers were uninjured.   ...

I am sorry to hear this. This in Brooklyn is indeed a drive-by shooting, the Kansas headline seems slightly misleading, the officer was checking about a drive-by shooting when, I think the story goes, a man in the group he was approaching opened fire on the officer.
