NAVSEA Commander: Dismantlement of Enterprise May Be Competed

ARLINGTON, Va. — The new commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command said the Navy is looking at alternatives for the dismantlement of the hull of the inactivated aircraft carrier Enterprise.
The Enterprise, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, was inactivated in December 2012 at Naval Station Norfolk, Va. The Navy had all reusable components removed before the ship was moved across the James River to Newport News Shipbuilding for removal of its nuclear reactors and associated components. Following decommissioning, the Navy had planned to tow the hull around Cape Horn to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., for final dismantlement of the hull.
“I’m encouraged by the fact that we’re looking at other alternatives for the ship-breaking [of Enterprise] and competing that work,” said Vice Adm. Thomas J. Moore, speaking July 13 to an audience at a Navy League Special Topic Breakfast.
